Mission:
Echos on the Deck
Location: Sentinel Station
Timeline: Current
Captain Greene stood in the hangar as he watched various members exit the latest transport to arrive at the station. At the current rate of arrival, Sentinel was on the verge of being fully staffed. This transport was also delivering his Chief Medical Officer. Someone whose expertise is urgent at this time. After reviewing her record, Greene quickly realized that Doctor Belanger might just be the option needed to help resolve or slow down this problem with the Nausicaans.
Jane took a few steps after clearing the ship's airlock, letting people in more of a hurry go first for security checks. She was carrying two bags. One was for personal items, the other for precious professional records she would miss dearly if they got lost for a few weeks or months. The rest of her belongings, medical supplies she knew she wouldn't find at the station, would be delivered straight to Sickbay if all went well.
A PADD with her ID and assignment tucked under her left arm, she adjusted the other bag. In the move, her gaze caught sight of a captain's insignia and went up to check the face.
Extending his hand, Maddox couldn't help but to grin. "Doctor Belanger. Welcome to Sentinel Station. I hope your journey here was a smooth one."
Jane's right hand was just about free enough to return the handshake, her eyes completing a quick assessment. Time would tell but she had a good feeling. She smiled.
"I got where I needed to go in good time, that's smooth enough for me Captain. Permission to come aboard Sir?"
"Permission granted. Let me help you with that bag." Reaching over he took hold of the heavier bag. Moving towards the exit. They stepped out in to the corridor. "I know you're expecting to settle in before getting into any craziness. But we a Nausicaan in sickbay who was injured during an altercation with security. Paralyzed from the waist down."
Jane's eyes darted reflexively to the bag he was carrying. There may be more answers in there than in the Starfleet medical database, or so she hoped because she would need all the data she could get. Nausicaans died often enough around known space but seldom with a skilled surgeon to follow up with an autopsy. The live ones hardly asked for medical help from authorities, perhaps some back street quack in a pinch. They were a hardy species...
This quick train of thoughts led to a question before the Captain may wonder if she had even heard him.
"I wasn't expecting such a complex case on arrival, Sir. When did it happen and who has been in charge of the patient?" She started taking bigger strides without thinking of it.
"It's been four days," he answered. "The Vulcans checked him out initially and could couldn't figure it out. They didn't have a skilled enough Doctor onboard. Since then, he has been under the care of Ensign Vireen, the head nurse on staff here at the station."
Jane stopped in her tracks at the news. "Then I'd hope my Vulcan counterpart left behind more than a diagnosis. If you don't mind, I'd rather get to Sickbay now, Sir. Settling in can wait until I know more." Her chin pointed to the bag he was carrying. "I'll need this in any case."
Noticing the look. He could tell that the doctor was ready to get right to business. Something in his head was telling him to get out of the way and let Belanger get right to business. Simply nodding, Greene handed the bag over. "I will let you get to it then. If you need anything, please let me know."
"Thank you for meeting me on arrival, Sir," Jane got hold of her second bag again. "I will be sure to send my report when I have something concrete to put on the table."
Their ways parted. Jane followed indications to Sickbay. It didn't look too busy at the moment. Within a handful seconds, she was spotted and led to an Ensign working a console. The Head Nurse turned away from her work as Jane introduced herself.
The Orion female gave a warm smile. "Welcome to Sickbay, Doctor. I was updating a report for you. The station personnel is arriving these days and Medical isn't at full complement yet but we're getting there soon. Would you like to take a tour?"
Jane was still taking in Main Sickbay. She had hoped for this but not set her expectations too high, just in case. The new station came with a state of the art layout and more equipment than the Essex or even her transport.
"I think I get the gist of the good news," Jane smiled. "Is it possible I might even have an office to top these wonders?"
The Head Nurse nearly chuckled and led her there. Jane set down her bags with some care, the bigger one on the top of her desk.
"There is more than Main Sickbay, Doctor," the Head Nurse hinted.
"Decon chamber, isolation ward, morgue... "
"Also medical labs and a secondary infirmary for emergencies," the Nurse eyes sparkled at Jane's reaction.
"We're being treated right indeed," Jane breathed, before returning to her main concern.
The ensign watched. The CMO was opening the larger bag then extracting a large box. When she opened it, it appeared to be filled with a large number of memory sticks and cards, all in an assortment of colours and meticulously labelled.
"This is a select portion of the Interspecies Medical Exchange database,, " Jane's hand swept over it. "I didn't like the idea of relying on long distance comms. I'll get the updates and the rest of the data eventually but this will help us get started. Starfleet Medical is still in the process of approving and integrating the IMED and it promises to be a long one. I hear we have a Nausicaan patient with serious injuries," she moved on while taking her seat. "Anyone else?"
Nyxala was very impressed by database that the doctor had pulled out of her bag, "Minor scraps as some newer personnel settles in their new departments. Vhordek Vaul is our only resident patient. A Starfleet surgeon examined him and gave recommendations before the Admiral's ship left. We have tried to keep him... comfortable. I can give you the surgeon's report at once."
"Please," Jane nodded. "Then you can take the time to finish your own report, Ensign. Under the circumstances, Mister Vaul will be my first priority. If anyone needs to see me in the next hour, I'll be right here. We can do the tour and introductions later."
Simply nodding, Ensign Vireen returned to her duties.
