Mission:
Echos on the Deck
Location: USS Yelroan: Ready Room
Captain Greene stepped aboard the Vulcan ship Yelroan. The Admiral had requested to meet him upon his arrival to the station. Arriving at the office, he pressed the chime and entered upon getting called in. Passing through the office doors, he found Admiral Vedak staring out the window. The Vulcan seemed to be in deep contemplation. For a people who suppressed their emotions, this one almost looked frustrated. "You wanted to see me, Admiral?"
Turning his attention to the human, Vedak raised an eyebrow. "Captain Greene, welcome to Sentinel Station. I trust your journey here was a pleasant one." He extended his hand over to the seat.
"Yes, it was." Taking the cue, Maddox sat down. "And then I arrived at some unpleasant news."
"You would be referring to the accident on the station," the Admiral replied.
Greene simply nodded and smiled. "Got the news as I stepped out of the airlock. Makes for a tough first day, and I didn't even receive a heads up."
Raising an eyebrow, the Vulcan took a seat. "Logic dictated that I keep this news off as many channels as possible. Been working with officials on how to handle Nausicaa in an attempt to keep this from getting as Humans call out of control."
"Out of control?" Maddox almost laughed, hearing those words come out of Vedak's mouth. Clearly, working joint missions with Earth was having some influence. "So how have these talks been going, so far?"
That same frustrated look briefly appeared on his face. "There have been no talks with Nausicaa. Starfleet Command wishes to sit back observe how things develop. Also the Chief Petty Officer who was running things on the station at the time didn't alert Starfleet until twenty-two hours after the incident."
"So, security delayed on an incident of this magnitude?"
"Based on our research of the incident," Vedak continued. "Security acted according to their protocols. The Nausicaan pulled a knife on security. And the result was security pulling their firearm and firing on the stun setting. The issue was that the Nausicaan fell back over the balcony, going through a table below."
This was the first time that the Captain had gotten the full story. It was clearly an accident. But the question now falls on whether security should have been more aware of their surroundings. But when in a spur of the moment situation when a sharp weapon is pulled on you. The last thing on your mind is the attacker falling back over the balcony. "Admiral how bad are the injuries?"
"Paralyzed from the waist down Captain." Vadek's face was calm, cool and dispassionate in Vulcan fashion. "Public acknowledgement would be...insufficient."
"Insufficient," Maddox responded. "Anything else?"
Simply raising an eyebrow, the Admiral continued. "I would recommend continued medical care, continuing to detain his comrades, and delaying disclosure to Nausicaan authorities for now."
Leaning forward in his seat, Captain Maddox thought about the recommendation that was just given to him. The position that; he was now placed in as the commander of this station. "Are those Starfleet's orders?"
"Those are simply my recommendations Captain. I read your file, and I believe that you're capable of handling this delicate situation. I'm not going to act as if this is an easy task for anyone. Let alone, a brand commanding officer. But I cannot stresss the level of importance that this station has to this region of space."
"Admiral, I fully understand and accept the task that is being given to me," Maddox said, speaking up. "Basically, maintain stability in the region and make friends. Got the briefing when I first accepted this as the assignment that the Federation wants to increase its membership over the next few years. How many personnel have arrived to the station so far?"
Vedak raised an eyebrow and decided to follow the Captain's lead into changing the subject. "Currently the stations personnel with those who arrived with you and another transport this morning at three hundred. There will be another, arriving in the morning with your First Officer. In another week, another will arrive completing you at four hundred and eighty."
Placing his hands together, Maddox thought of the most important question. "And this stations defenses?"
"Fully operational Captain. The Yelroan will be departing in the morning. But will be within the sector in case you need assistance with this current dilemma."
"If there's nothing else Admiral, then I better get to it then," Greene responded."
"Dismissed Captain."
