Mission:
Echos on the Deck
Location: USS Frontier and Sentinel Station
Captain Maddox Greene sat back in the center chair of the old, refitted Ganges-class vessel as it was just minutes away from Starfleet’s newest space station location, strategically located between New Xindus, Regulus, Celes, Nausicaa, and Suliban space. Over the last decade, since the Delphic Expanse became nonexistent, Earth and Vulcan have conducted extensive scientific research in the area where the expanse once existed. Contact with the Xindi people was nonexistent until four years ago, when a Nausicaan vessel had a run-in with a Xindi Primate crew. This resulted in Starfleet receiving a request for assistance from the primate vessel, which ultimately prevented a very likely war in this region of space. That encounter led Starfleet Command to discuss further exploration and to push for a stronger Federation presence in this area. Three years ago, the brass agreed to build a station between the worlds in this area to maintain a certain level of diplomacy, trade, control and most important border control.
The name of this station would be known as Station Sentinel which would be placed under the command of Captain Maddox Greene. During the Xindi attack on Earth. Maddox was just a little over a month shy of graduating from the Academy. The level of fear and anger at that time. The concept was the United Federation of Planets, which almost failed before even getting off the ground due to fears from the people of Earth. Now they were seven years into the Federation's founding. Things were going extremely well. The Federation had already doubled in size and with every new world discovered, it seemed as if the Federation had the intention of bringing on more worlds. Which was one of the reasons Maddox had been given this assignment. He had spent his career coming up in the Armory department and then making it to Executive Officer four years ago. Coming up during the time of the Earth-Romulan War, he knew how to fight. But somewhere along the line he got good with talking to people. And over time, that skill got to the right people who specifically requested him for this assignment. The idea of floating in space station with only shuttle pods, didn't sit right him. So, the Captain had managed to talk his way into of having a designated ship assigned to the station. And he was given the USS Frontier. The refitted Ganges classes was now capable of warp four. She wasn't the biggest or baddest the fleet had to offer, but she would get the job done.
In the distance they could see three ships docked at the station. Two Earth ships and a Vulcan vessel. Probably delivering assigned personnel, supplies or just stopping before pushing off until the unknown. Before his last assignment, Maddox had been assigned to a security detail on Alpha Centauri. A calm but boring assignment keeping an eye on a diplomat. It was definitely what he needed after being at war for years. Watching that diplomat work, even changed how he operated with people. Rule number one, that he learned was that everyone wants something. It was simply just figuring what each side wanted. The tougher part was acquiring what people wanted or needed.
A few minutes the Frontier had been cleared and officially docked. Shut-down procedures had commenced and the Captain left the Lieutenant on the bridge to handle that process. Maddox was far too eager to check out the station. Exiting the ship, the Captain looked around the station, which was now his. Brand new station with a brand-new Captain and a brand-new crew. In time, they would get to know one another. Four hundred and fifty personnel, Starfleet and civilian would be under his watch. Quite a bit more than the usual sixty or so commonly assigned to a ship. Exiting the docking ring, he found himself staring at a Petty Officer. The young man seemed to be well put together, stood confidently, and yet was a little nervous.
"Captain Greene, I am Yeoman Christian Avers," the enlisted man announced.
Simply smiling, the Captain approached. "Relax Yeoman. It's a pleasure to meet you Christian Avers. How long have you been on the station?"
Returning the smile with one of his own, the Yeoman eased up slightly. "I've been here almost three weeks now. Brought in to help get things situated and organized for your arrival."
"And how has that been going?"
Christian thought about the question. No point in lying or exaggerating. "Things were a bit off track, but we're on course. Had some issues with a group of Nausicaans who stopped by the station earlier this week. Resulted in a fight and of one of them being paralyzed."
Greene was clearly shocked by this news. "Why am I just hearing about this now?"
"Admiral Vedak from that Vulcan ship out there has been wanting to keep this quiet and, on a need-to-know basis," Avers mentioned. "He would like to meet with you as soon as possible. Likely to brief you on the issue."
"And who has been running things before the arrival of the Vulcans?" he asked, rubbing his forehead.
The Yeoman handed a PADD to the Captain. "That would be Chief Petty Officer Alexa Truman. Assigned to the Armory department. When the small group of officers shipped off the weekend prior, she was the senior person on board. That's a copy of the incident report."
Accepting the PADD, Maddox sighed. "Let me guess. When the ships left the station the Nausicaans showed up?"
"Less than twenty-four hours later."
"And what about the other Nausicaans?" the CO inquired. "Seriously doubt he popped up here alone."
"The three others have been detained all this time in the brig," Christian answered.
Looking up towards the ceiling as if searching for the right words, the Captain rubbed the bridge of his nose. First day arriving and already an interplanetary incident that could get ugly quick. Odds are the Vulcan Admiral was already working to resolve the incident. The meeting would likely be a formality regarding what took place and the next course of action. He then could simply move forward with running the place.
"Avers make sure my things get to my quarters. I'm heading off to meet with Admiral Vedak."
"Aye sir," said Avers with a nod. With everything that was going on, he was glad to have the proper chain of command arrive at the station. His job was all about maintaining structure and order. Enlisted were more than capable of running things, but Officers were in place for a reason.
