Mission:
Echos on the Deck
Location: VSS Sh'Raal
Thin eyebrow raised, Captain Saya studied the two security officers standing before her. “To summarize your request,” she said at last, “you propose diverting the Sh’Raal three days from its current mission to aid in an investigation with no outstanding questions and support a brand new, fully upgraded station’s crew with defending it from Nausicaans should diplomacy prove inadequate.”
“It would sound illogical when framed in such a way,” Sublieutenant Rik’koshvar replied evenly.
“Prior to Admiral Vadek’s arrival, a Chief Petty Officer was in command of Sentinel Station,” T’Vei said. She called up a personnel list on her padd and passed it to her captain. “While the commanding officer and several personnel have arrived, the station has no dedicated security officer assigned. The Sh’Raal’s next mission is a geological survey and is unlikely to require significant security support. The Nausicaans may not be the last danger the station encounters. Captain, allow us to assist. After all, the intention is that we are now one Starfleet. We will return to the Sh’Raal once the survey is complete and Starfleet has assigned a chief of security.”
The faintest furrows creased Saya’s brow as she studied the padd before returning it to T’Vei. “And why send both of you when one would suffice?”
“Because there are presently no security officers aboard the station,” Rik’koshvar replied. “Vulcan efficiency will prove greater with two of us.”
T’Vei shot him a look. “Our talents complement one another. Additionally, Subcommander T’Par does not require us in order to recalibrate targeting sensors and inspect torpedo tubes for damage.”
Saya steepled her fingers and allowed the silence to linger, testing their resolve. When neither officer, moved, she spoke again. “Approved. You are hereby permitted to take the Velor to Sentinel Station and will report to Captain Greene until the Sh’Raal’s return in sixty standard days’ time or until Captain Greene releases you from his service. I will submit the orders to Starfleet and Vulcan High Command. If the station requires the Sh’Raal’s assistance, hail us and we will return earlier than expected. Represent Vulcan well. Live long and prosper.”
“Peace and long life,” the two sublieutenants echoed before departing the ready room.
“I told you,” Rik’koshvar said once the door had slid shut behind them.
“That is incorrect,” T’Vei replied calmly. “Had I not been present, your arguments would have proven inadequate.”
Rik’koshvar inclined his head in acknowledgment. “I knew I did not have to craft my arguments well because you were present.”
“Now,” he continued. “Shall we begin our journey? I have always been curious to meet a human.”
