| Personal History | Varkl enjoyed a typical Tellarite youth with childhood toys that included sets of tools and small electronic gadgets. In primary school his engineering aptitude started to emerge when he disassembed a school computer console. Upon completion of primary school he was enrolled in Engineering School to enhance his skills, then the famed Engineering Upperschool. At the Upperschool he initially followed his fathers occupation, learning starship structural engineering, after completing that course with honors he followed his early interest in computers, receiving a certificate of distinction for creating a working interface for Terran and Tellarite computer systems. He completed his education with an elective in Fusion power systems. Upon graduation he was recruited by the Tellarite Shipyard assigned as a Structural Engineer. He was often assigned to working small utility vessels welding hull pieces in place. After the Federation was founded, the shipyard received the contract to refit and upgrade a number of the former Terran fleet of starships. In order to be granted security clearance to be part of the team installing advanced Unotroic computers on the ships, he was required to take some courses at Starfleet Academy, which was being expanded to integrate experienced personnel and crews from Andoran, Tellarite and Vulcan fleets. The program was accelerated with different coursework designed for each culture's perceived needs, but cultual relations was the prime focus. At the end of the year he graduated with the rank of Ensign, granted the clearance needed, and returned to Tellar to continue work. Once the Freedom upgrade project was completed in 2165, he wanted to pick up a third specailty to increase his knowledge. After looking at options he requested a transfer to the Propulsion team working on the newly designated Columbia Class ships. The job was quite challenging; design teams had been working on modifying the best parts of Human, Tellarite, Andorian and Vulcan warp cores. Getting them to actually work together and upgrading engines on existing ships posed much bigger problems. An entirely new class of warp core was eventually created to be used on new vessels. After three years working with Fusion and MARA power cores, he read an announcement for volunteers to staff a newly commissioned starbase on the Federation frontier. The job would prove to be a new challenge with the chance to meet many new cultures. |
